Madang
The Kar Kar Bilum originates from Kar Kar Island in the Madang Province. Kar Kar is located just 30 km from the Provincial township of Madang, on the north east coast of PNG.
Kar Kar bilum is sourced, processed, dyed and woven from natural fibre plants on the Island of Kar Kar. It is handmade by women who adhere to cultural protocols on the patterning of Kar Kar bilums. Certain patterns depict clan, totems and status of the carrier of Kar Kar bilum. It takes several weeks to complete a Kar Kar bilum and may last several generations if valued and cared for correctly.
Each piece is handmade, therefore unique to the woman weaver and may have variations.
