This type of Bilum originates from the Sepik region. The bush twine used to weave the Bilum is made from 100% natural fibre using the traditional technique of hand rolling plant fibres into twine over the knee. The twine has been dyed using natural pigments made from plants and ochres.
The bags design is inspired by the weavers life experience, commonly nature, and their surrounds can be found in the patterns of the bag. It has been embellished with a raffia tassel and pom in hot pink in Madagascar.
With the sale of this bag the weaver is able to provide support to her family through access to education, food and health care.
